How to Prepare Your Home's Exterior Before Hurricane Season

Hurricane season in South Florida runs from June 1 through November 30 — six months of potential storms, heavy rain, and high winds. Most homeowners focus on shutters, generators, and emergency supplies when they think about hurricane prep. But your home's exterior condition plays a bigger role in storm readiness than most people realize.

Here is why exterior cleaning matters before hurricane season, and the checklist we recommend for every South Florida homeowner.

Why Exterior Prep Matters Before Storms

A clean, well-maintained exterior is not just about appearances. It directly affects how your home performs during a storm and how quickly you can assess damage afterward.

Loose debris becomes projectiles. Dirt, debris, and organic buildup on your roof, gutters, and exterior surfaces can become airborne during high winds. Clearing it before the season reduces that risk.

Clogged gutters cause flooding. This is the big one. When gutters are packed with leaves, palm fronds, and seed pods, they cannot handle the volume of water that South Florida storms produce. Water overflows onto your fascia, soffit, and foundation — causing damage that is expensive to repair and often not fully covered by insurance.

Dirty surfaces hide existing damage. Mold, mildew, and grime can conceal cracks, gaps, and deterioration in your exterior surfaces. Cleaning before the season lets you see — and fix — problems before a storm makes them worse.

Documentation matters for insurance claims. If you clean and photograph your home's exterior before hurricane season, you have a clear baseline for any insurance claim after a storm.

The Pre-Hurricane Season Exterior Checklist

1. Clean and Inspect Your Gutters

This is the single most important item on the list. South Florida gutters collect palm fronds, oak leaves, seed pods, and organic debris year-round. By the time hurricane season starts, most gutters have significant buildup.

Professional gutter cleaning removes all debris, flushes the downspouts, and checks for proper drainage. While cleaning, we also inspect for loose fasteners, sagging sections, and gaps at the seams — all of which need to be addressed before heavy rain season.

A gutter that overflows during a tropical storm can dump hundreds of gallons of water directly against your fascia board and foundation. The resulting rot and water intrusion can cost thousands to repair.

2. Pressure Wash Driveways and Walkways

South Florida's heat and humidity create ideal conditions for algae, mold, and mildew growth on concrete and pavers. These organisms make surfaces dangerously slippery when wet — and during a storm, your driveway and walkways will be very wet.

Pressure washing removes algae and mold growth, restoring traction to your surfaces. It also removes oil stains, dirt buildup, and organic material that can become slippery or cause staining if storm water spreads it across your property.

3. Clean Windows and Inspect Seals

Your windows are your home's most vulnerable points during a storm. Before hurricane season, have them professionally cleaned and take the opportunity to inspect the seals around every window.

Cracked or deteriorating seals are a major problem during storms. Even a Category 1 hurricane produces wind-driven rain that can force water through compromised seals, causing interior water damage that is costly to remediate.

Clean windows also let you see clearly whether seals are intact, whether frames show signs of corrosion, and whether any glass has existing cracks that need attention before a storm puts pressure on them.

4. Wash Your Home's Exterior

Mold and mildew thrive on South Florida home exteriors year-round. Before hurricane season, a professional soft wash removes mold, mildew, algae, and dirt from your siding, stucco, and painted surfaces.

Why does this matter for hurricane prep? Mold and mildew weaken the surfaces they grow on over time. Storm debris that impacts a mold-weakened surface causes more damage than it would on a clean, sound surface. Removing organic growth also prevents it from spreading under storm debris and accelerating after the storm when conditions are wet and warm.

5. Document Your Home's Condition

After completing your exterior cleaning and maintenance, walk your property and photograph everything. Document the condition of your gutters, windows, roof edges, siding, and any existing damage.

If a storm causes damage, these photos establish a pre-storm baseline for your insurance claim. Without documentation, it can be difficult to prove which damage was storm-related versus pre-existing.

Start Before the Season

The best time to complete this checklist is May — before the season officially begins and before the summer heat and afternoon storms make exterior work more difficult. Do not wait until a storm is in the forecast. By then, every cleaning and maintenance company in South Florida is booked solid.
